Meat Pie

Meat pies are an ubiquitous Australian comfort food. These meat pies generally contain minced meat, onions, mushrooms, and cheese. You can buy them in cafes for dine-in or take-away at roadside stalls. So iconic, every Australia Day there is a meat pie eating contest.

Ingredients

  • 1 finely chopped onion
  • 500 gr ground beef
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 cubes beef stock
  • 1/4 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 pinch of salt and pepper *to taste
  • 3 tbsp wheat flour
  • 1 sheet of shortcrust pastry
  • 1 sheet of pastries
  • 1 egg for glaze

Method

  1. Cook the meat and onions until the meat is brown.
  2. Add the cups of water, stock, sauce and seasonings.
  3. Bring to a boil and simmer for 15 minutes.
  4. Mix flour and remaining water, add meat, bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes. Cold.
  5. Cover the pie plate with the shortcrust cake.
  6. Spoon into the cooled meat mixture. Wet the edges of the pastry with water.
  7. Sprinkle with puff pastry, press down to seal the edges, trim and brush with egg.
  8. Bake at 230C for 15 minutes. Reduce heat to 190C and bake for another 25 minutes until golden.
