Vetkoek

This fast food called 'Vetkoek' is one of the typical South African snacks. So this vetkoek consists of flour that is made into dough, then fried. After frying, usually this vekoek will be filled with meat, jam, and various fillings according to your taste. INGREDIENTS

  • 6¾ cups Flour (all purpose flour)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp Sugar
  • 1 pack of Yeast
  • Warm water
  • Cooking oil (for frying)

  • Mix sugar and yeast with a little warm water and let it foam.
  • Sift flour and salt.
  • Pour yeast into flour and knead.
  • Keep adding water and knead until you have the consistency of bread dough.
  • Leave the dough in a bowl and cover the bowl with a cloth.
  • Let the dough rise for about 45-60 minutes until it has doubled in size.

How to Make Vetkoek

  1. Pour cooking oil into the skillet to have about 1-1 inches of oil in the pan. Heat the oil to about 375°F.
  2. Divide the dough into balls the size of a tennis ball.
  3. Roll out the dough to 1 inch thick and about the size of the palm of your hand.
  4. Place two or three flat pieces of dough at a time into the oil. Fry each side until golden brown.
